Mentor Couples
Your marriage is a place of encounter
You’re likely here because an engaged or civilly married couple has chosen you and your spouse to accompany them on their journey to the altar. Your marriage, imperfect as you may think it to be, has something unique to offer. When you got married in the Church, you not only received a sacrament, but you became a sacrament by which others can encounter the love of Christ. Thank you for saying "YES" to living out your sacramental call more fully. We are confident that you’ll receive more than you give from this experience!
Next Steps
-
Coaching Session
1 hour
Your local Marriage Formation Coordinator or WTL Coach (online) will schedule a meeting with you and the engaged or civilly-married couple to review the process and materials and get a few tips on how to be a mentor. You will have plenty of opportunities for questions.
-
Double Date
We encourage couples to do something fun together before beginning formal meetings!
-
Monthly Meetings
1 - 1.5 hours
Meet with the engaged couple six times (or four for couples using the Civil Marriage Initiative) before the wedding. During these meetings, you will discuss the questions and activities in the workbook that will be given to you by the parish Marriage Formation Coordinator, priest, or deacon at the orientation. The fifth (or third for civilly married couples using the CMI program) meeting is the Theology Discussion Night, and the priest or deacon is invited to your home to discuss what you learned at a local or online Be More retreat (you may be invited to participate in the retreat).
-
Pray
Attend Mass together with your couple once or twice a month and consider making a Holy Hour with them to pray for their marriage. Remember them in your daily prayers and send them a word of encouragement in between meetings!
-
Ongoing Accompaniment
Continue reaching out to your couple as they begin married life together! Consider meeting up every couple of months and inviting them to small groups or retreats in your parish or through Witness to Love’s virtual marriage enrichment options.
Find more resources here.
Let them know they are always welcome to attend Mass with you and that you are there for them!
